The Best Word in Travel Vocabulary

Singapore—the wonderful hostel

After arriving here in Thailand I discovered that I needed to leave the country to get a business visa. After some research, I concluded that a trip to Singapore was the perfect location: it is pretty close to Thailand and is known to easily give out business visas. The last thing I want to do is fly to another country at my expense and then get turned down for a visa!

The only disadvantage is that I don’t have much money. Most hotels that I saw were 150-400 dollars a night. Even the YMCA, the supposed “cheap” location was still 100 dollars a night. What was I to do?

As I scanned one of the websites, I word caught my eye: hostel—the most beautiful word in the traveling vocabulary. As I Googled for Singapore hostels I found over a dozen of them all for about 20 bucks a night! I went online and booked myself the cheapest hostel I could find. The alluring descriptive name—98SG--doesn’t exactly conjure up images of luxury and ease. However, the cheap, poorly assembled 98SG (I guess if you run a hostel you don’t have time to pay a web designer) website claims that it provides a bed, breakfast, an internet connection and a locker for your valuables for just 13 dollars (USD). True, I will be sharing a room with five other people, and the reviews suggest I will have to wait for an hour for an employee to check me in (cheap rates=poor service apparently) but I’m sure it will be an adventure nonetheless.

I leave Thailand tomorrow. Only time will tell if those 13 dollars are worth it...
