Thai food is absolutely amazing. One way to know if a food is good is to count the number of restaurants that sell it. In the Provo, UT area alone there are at least five Thai restaurants. That seems like a lot, but after coming here I’ve decided that there should at last be 20: Thai food is not only nutritious, but it delectable as well.
Thailand excites me because of the wide variety of things I have never tasted or seen before. Today, for instance, I went with a coworker to the street vendor behind our office building. The woman at the vendor was selling iced drinks. She had a whole array of fancy foods: carrot, orange, banana, strawberry and a couple of other exotic fruits. My coworker suggested I try the lychee and orange combination. The Lychee or “Ngaw” is a strange hairy fruit that has a clear fruit inside. After taking off the green and red furry skin, the inside looks like a large skinned grape (if you ever skinned your grapes as a kid you know what I am talking about). Any way, after de-skinning and de-seeding the lychee, the woman threw it in to a blender (don’t ask me how she has electricity on her rickety, tin vending cart) and gave the drink to me in a smart looking disposable plastic cup. For thirty cents I was drinking a fruit smoothie that I haven’t even heard of before! I’ll take a Thai street vendor over Jamba Juice any day!
